Diary of an ACS Intern

Written By: Tarra Symons, AMFT at ACS, On-Campus Counseling Program

What is the typical day like as an ACS intern? Hmm, well, first of all, that’s hard to say because no two days are the same! You can do your very best to plan, be very well-organized, and feel prepared, but sometimes you just need to use the “f” word… “flexibility” that is.

As therapists, we can’t predict, and neither can the youth we work with, when they will have a hard day. Any given day can be unpredictable. Students may drop in needing support, students might not be able to attend their scheduled session, a call might come in from the guidance office requesting assistance, or any other number of situations may arise. Shuffling our schedules and making a little tweak here and there with call slips is sometimes required, and everything eventually falls back into place.

I have been part of ACS for four years, and it has meant a great deal to me. My time as an intern has been very meaningful, and each year has brought new opportunities for growth and the need to manage challenging situations. What has been crucial for me in these moments is the continual support of my supervisors and peers at ACS. These individuals have provided encouragement, greatly appreciated advice, kindness, and have supported my learning.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing team of thoughtful and committed individuals, who share the same core value of wanting to support youth who are facing challenges in their lives, and of wanting to support positive change in the world at large.
