Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS) receives $20,000 grant from Boston Scientific Foundation
Funds will benefit Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Adolescent Counseling Services (ACS), a community-based nonprofit agency dedicated to the healthy social and emotional development of teens, has received a grant of $20,000 from the Boston Scientific Foundation. The grant will specifically benefit ACS’s Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment (ASAT) Program.

This is a first-time grant for ACS from the Boston Scientific Foundation. “We greatly appreciate Boston Scientific’s support for our ASAT Program,” said Dr. Philippe Rey, ACS Executive Director.

With Boston Scientific facilities located in San Jose, Mountain View, Cupertino, and Los Gatos, the Foundation has made this grant exclusive to Santa Clara County Residents.

“We are pleased to support the important work of ACS and the ASAT program in helping to provide substance abuse treatment and counseling to young people and their families in Santa Clara County,” said Paul Donovan, President of the Boston Scientific Foundation.

The ASAT Program provides an intensive outpatient treatment to teens and families struggling with addiction and recovery, prevention education, and professional assessment. ACS offers state certified outpatient treatment using an effective model in adolescent treatment.  “Our ASAT Program is the only service of its kind in this area,” Dr. Rey said.

In addition to ongoing problems with marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy, a recent study funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows the sale of narcotic analgesic pills is increasing, as is the non-medical use of prescription drugs. Young adults have the highest rates of lifetime use of prescription drugs and consider them to be “safer” than street drugs.

“Currently, there are not enough services for adolescents to receive substance abuse treatment in Santa Clara County,” said Brenda Stern, ASAT Program Director. “With only eight beds available for low income residential treatment in all of Santa Clara County, the need for outpatient treatment programs is crucial.”
